LASU adopts 190 as 2 other universities set admission score below 180
JAMB Cut-off Mark LASU adopts 190 as 2 other universities set admission score below 180
Because the JAMB benchmark is perceived too low for university
education, educational institutions have decided to go by the decision
of their school senates.
Following the controversial policy to peg cut-off marks at 120, Lagos State University has adopted 190 as its cut off point for admission.
The
Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun on a
Talk Radio program, Morning Digest With Jimi Disu on Tuesday, August 29,
said that the Senate of Lagos State University has decided that the
minimum point for admission in the school be pegged at 190.
"The
cut-off point for LASU is 190. If you don't have a score of 190 you can
not even register on the platform, it wouldn't accept you because it
has been programmed for that. That is the decision of the Senate of the
University."

Fagboun
further explained that there is a difference between institutional
cut-off and program cut-off saying that candidates would have to meet
both cut-offs to read the course of their choice at the state
university.
"We must also realize
that there is a difference between institutional cut-off and program
cut-off. So if you have the institutional cut off of 190, it allows you
to be able to enter the platform, it now depends on the course you want
to do. If you want to read Law, the cut off for Law may be 270 and if
you don't make that 270, you can not go in for Law. If you want to read
Medicine, its cut off may be 275, if you want to read Chemistry, it may
be 250 and at the end of the day, you will find out that the cut off is
always there.
Meanwhile, the Vice
Chancellor of Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai, Professor Muhammad
Nasir has also announced that the institution has pegged its cut-off
point at 160.
According to Punch the Vice Chancellor said the 120 benchmark is unreasonable.
The Federal University Gusau has also announced its cut off mark for admission on Sunday, August 27.
The
Information Officer of the university, Umar Usman in an interview with
the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN disclosed that the university management
had arrived at the decision to set 170 as minimum cut-off marks after
getting statistics on the candidates who applied for admission into the
institution.
The
JAMB's cut-off mark of 120 has been widely considered too low for
university admission standard and a lot of Vice Chancellors have kicked
against it.
However, the Joint Admission
and Matriculation Board Registrar has said the 120 benchmark is not for
admission but for ranking of the candidates.
